Our History
Looking at High Point Baptist Chapel today with 206 magnificent acres
of land, an ever-growing congregation and numerous outreach ministries,
it is easy to forget the humble beginnings of the "little church in
the country."
Church Beginnings
While visiting the Morgantown, Pennsylvania area in the early part of
1958, Pastor William Park, Sr. and Mr. Robert Cone recognized the
community's need for a fundamental church. Pastor Park and his wife left their
successful ministry in Huntington Valley, Pennsylvania, to begin this
new venture for the Lord.
The El-Mor Chevrolet Company housed the Thursday night Bible study
that would become the nucleus of the church. A series of tent meetings
introduced the new ministry to the community.
On December 10, 1958, the church purchased the 173-acre High Point
Farm. Services were held in the farm's manor house until July of 1959
when the hayloft of the barn was converted to a 70-seat chapel. The
church was officially chartered in February of 1960.
High Point Chapel became High Point Baptist Chapel in July of 1964,
and one year later moved to a new church building with seating for 250,
nursery facilities and six classrooms. The parsonage, built on a hill
overlooking the chapel building and campgrounds, was completed about the
same time.
Structures
A gymnasium-auditorium complex was begun at the camp in 1967. An
educational wing was added to the church in 1970 and a larger church
auditorium followed in 1975. Expansion continued with the addition of
classrooms in 1976 and 1986. A new gymnasium complex located next to the
educational wing was finished in January 1988. In 1990, a 250-foot
waterslide, a ropes course and a playground were added to the camp. The
school playground was also expanded. The climbing tower and land trolley
were added activities at camp in 1993. A vestibule was added to the main
auditorium in 1995 to allow for more seating.
Ministries
Besides growing in structure, High Point has grown in souls and
service. Visitation programs started. Specialized ministries such as the
High Point Institute of Missions and the Adults Involved in Missions
programs helped meet missionaries' needs as well as allowing church
people the opportunity to participate in ministry. Today our church
supports 18 missionary families worldwide. A children's home opened in
1977 to help meet the needs of missionary families. New churches have
been started in nearby communities: Maranatha Baptist church in Sinking
Springs; Faith Baptist Church in Phoenixville; Antietam Valley Baptist
Church in Reading; Cocalico Community Chapel in Denver; and Community
Baptist Church in Blandon. Other churches are currently being planted
with High Point's help in Avon, Ohio and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
High Point Camp
Young people have always been one of High Point's principal concerns.
The camp ministry, started in 1961, had a small beginning, but
flourished with time. In 1967 a 10-acre lake and a chapel in the woods
(today's Wilderness cabin) were added in time for the first eight-week
camp program. By 1969 the camp was operating on a 10-week schedule.
Today High Point Camp and Conference Center operates year-round,
ministering to several thousand campers each year.
High Point Baptist
Academy
High Point Baptist Academy was formed in 1972 with a handful of
students in K-6th grades. Within two years, grades 7-12 were added.
Enrollment averages 390 students and 31 faculty members.
Today, growth continues. Opportunities to establish new ministries in
the United States and around the world are being pursued. Faithful
Christians are serving the Lord in word and deed. People continue to be
saved through our ministry and join our church family. High Point goes
on caring for others and sharing Christ's message.
